The Growing trend of Lanyard Use

Written by Melissa | Wednesday, 07 December 2011

More and more you are seeing lanyards wherever you go. Used by individuals and groups, they can be seen in the government as well as the corporate environment. Even smaller businesses have found use for them. Most people know what they are, even if the word does not ring a bell. In general, a lanyard is a ribbon shaped material that is worn around the neck and hangs down below the chest. The ends connect with a clasp that allows for various attachments. This attachment is often an identification card, but there are many possibilities.

One of the reasons that they are being used more now than in the past is because of the great diversity of designs that are available, right off the shelf. These designs are in various widths as well as materials. There are also custom made lanyards available as well. Some of the materials include nylon, polyester, silk, and cotton. Your application, as well as your budget, will determine which material is selected. Some materials are more rugged and last longer than others and are more suitable for institutional use. Those made from silk or satin have a fashionable look to them are made with a cosmetic appeal in mind rather than a functional use.

Lanyards are growing more popular in the health care field. As the industry grows, so too is the need for identification. Many of the clip on identification cards are easily lost or stolen. This is especially true in today’s busy hospitals and clinics. When an ID card is used with a lanyard, it is not only easily seen, but has the advantage of being difficult to take from someone; it is more secure and will not fall off easily. This latter reason is why it has become common to see lanyards in any area where the control of the movement of people is necessary. For security reasons, only people who have had previous clearance are to be allowed in certain areas. They are issued ID cards and then wear it with a lanyard. This can be seen in professional sports that allow certain people on a playing field. These lanyards can also be seen in concerts for backstage access.

Businesses use them for special events such as conventions and other large gatherings. In less formal settings they can simply serve as a way to display name tags. But they can also serve as a pass that allows entry to various activities throughout a convention. Smaller businesses have found that custom lanyards can be made with a company logo and given away to customers as free gifts. Mothers love them and use them for keys that can be easily lost when with the family on the weekends or attending group events with children to watch. But regardless of the use, a business will get a lot of adverting from a lanyard. Because of their great functionality, they are used a lot, especially in public where the advertising will be seen by others.
