Priyanka Chopra: “I think Kareena doesn’t like me”

Written by Ashfaqur Rahman | Monday, 21 February 2011

Priyanka Chopra had an interesting chat with fimfare about her upcoming film and personal life.

If you were to choose seven husbands in real life who would they be?

(Laughs) Ek toh mil nahin raha, saat dhoondhwa rahi hai (I can’t find even one and you want me to choose seven)! Give it a try PC. You know what my problem is, if I wish for someone I’ll get him. So I don’t want to waste my wish.

If you could kill seven people, who would they be?

Hmmm… If I were to kill them, I would be giving them too much importance. I’d rather let them live and suffer.

Seven insults you’re never going to forget...

People have been extremely nice to me in the film industry and elsewhere. Also, by nature I’m a hugely forgiving person. And they’ve not been insults as such, rather some things that have hurt me. Early in my career I was told I wouldn’t survive if I didn’t wear short clothes or looked hot. That really affected me. I didn’t think I had too much talent. I don’t think  I have much of it even now. But I worked hard on it. Also people have preconceived notions that actresses are bimbettes. People make callous comments like, ‘She’s an airhead.’ But I’m a thinking girl. There’s one statement made by Kareena (Kapoor), which I’ll never forget. Someone asked her who she considered as competition. She replied, “Rani Mukerji.” Then she was asked, “What about your contemporaries like Priyanka, Katrina…?” She said, ‘Oh I thought you were talking about actors.” Obviously, she doesn’t consider us in her league. That really hurt me.
Then my brother once told me that I sounded like a man when I woke up every morning. He said, “Didi, I thought you were Papa.” Grrr!
Once, I was not cast in a film because of my skin colour. The director told me, “You are not fair enough to play this role.” It’s something I can’t do anything about.
There have been times I’ve been thrown out of a film because some other girl was ‘recommended’. I got used to it after a point. A co-actor once told me that he wanted this other girl to do it. I said alright and walked out of the film. I was hurt. Also losing the coffee hamper to Shahid Kapoor in Koffee With Karan is an insult I’ll never forget.
What really went wrong between Kareena Kapoor and you? The two of you were friends at one point.
(Laughs) I am not yet sure about that. We were never best friends or back-slapping buddies. Just that we had a lot of common friends. We used to often hang out together. But after a point, we got busy with our films and eventually lost touch. Then she started making callous remarks about me. I haven’t said anything about her ever. But it has happened so many times that now I am pretty sure that she doesn’t like me. I don’t really know what happened. I don’t have any form of distaste towards her.
If marooned on an island with Kareena, what would you do?
I wouldn’t need to do anything. She’s very entertaining so I would just listen to her.
What kind of tapes would you like to be leaked?
I would like to hear the conversation that happened between Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan at that party (where they fought). There’s so much speculation about it!
Didn’t you want to kill Tarun Mansukhani when he didn’t sign you for Dostana2?
No I wanted to kill Tarun during the making of Dostana. We called each other ‘husband and wife’ because we used to fight like crazy, scream and throw things at each other. But I love him. When he decided to make Dostana 2, I was one of the first people he spoke to about it. I knew I couldn’t be part of the sequel as my story ended with getting married to Bobby Deol. That was a fact we discussed during the making of Dostana.
Why did you agree to do Koffee With Karan with your ex-flame, Shahid?
Firstly, you have decided that he is my ‘ex’ or my ‘flame’. I didn’t. Secondly, it was Karan’s idea. He asked us to appear together. Shahid and I have a lot of fun together. We share super banter. Time flies when we talk so it just seemed ideal for us to go together.
Did you think about it before you agreed?
Yes. We both first said no. Because of all the speculation we thought it would be unnecessary fodder and tamasha. But we thought it’s better to be comfortable with someone and have a lot to talk about, rather than go with someone you don’t share the same kind of comfort level.
Numerous news reports claim that Shahid and you are back together. Are you seeing him?
You know I have never spoken about my personal relationships in press.
Care to comment on Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor’s outburst against Ranbir Kapoor on the talk show?
I have two takes on that. Firstly, hell hath no fury like a woman’s wrath. Secondly, I don’t think Deepika should be apologetic about how she felt. But I wouldn’t have gone to the extent of being so brazen with my words. I’m generally very private and don’t talk about my relationships. But that’s her call. However, when you have shared an amazing relationship, the sanctity of that should be maintained. somewhere she’s right and somewhere wrong.
Would you have done the same were you in her place?
I wouldn’t take potshots at anyone because I believe that if I’m not with someone it’s their loss. Hugely! And I’m not being arrogant.

One question you’d like to ask Deepika?
(Laughs) If I ever had a problem with my flight I’d ask her if she’d give me a free ticket on her fleet of airlines.

One question for Kareena?
(Thinks) Oh no that would be too nasty. Can we come back to this later?

Why does Akshay Kumar not work with you?
You can say it’s the other way round.

Point taken. Why won’t you work with Akshay Kumar?
Firstly, there’s no film that has been offered to us. Secondly, too much speculation has happened about us. I think it’s nicer to let the dust settle than to stir up a hornet’s nest.

You were recently linked up with your co-star Sahil Shroff on the sets of Don2.
That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard. It pissed me off. I haven’t even met him beyond the set. After pack up, I used to be with Shah Rukh (Khan), Farhan (Akhtar) and the others. You can’t link me up with any random guy just because I’m single. Sahil had the decency to tell me about what was being said at the wrap up party in Berlin. I was livid. It was retarded for someone to make up things like that.

Do you believe in love at first sight?
Initially, you’re attracted to someone because of his physical form. Call it lust, love or attraction. You can’t possibly know their mind and fall in love with their heart. So it is physical.

So have you ever lusted for someone?
I’ve never been in lust beyond the first five minutes. I have to be madly in love. I think I was Laila in my past life. I live as though I’m constantly in love, like a Sufi.

Who’s perfect marriage material in this industry?
(Blushes) Shah Rukh. But he’s already married. He’s all that I’d want the guy I marry to be.
